COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF STAKEHOLDERS CONFERENCE ON KWARA STATE POLYTECHNIC, ILORIN LAND ENCROACHMENT HELD ON THURSDAY, 4TH APRIL, 2024 AT ADMIRAL MUHAMMED ALABI LAWAL AUDITORIUM

At the end of the conference of the Kwara State Polytechnic Worldwide Alumni Association held by Stakeholders that include Alumni of the Polytechnic, Ministry of Tertiary Education, Journalists, Civil Society Organizations, Traditional Institutions, Student Union Government of Kwara State Polytechnic, Kwara State Geographic Information Services (KWAGIS) amongst others.

The convoy of the above-listed stakeholders carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the encroached areas starting from Oke-Aponle, Boyi, Gatta, Quarter C, Polytechnic Farm, Rector’s Lodge, Institute of Environmental Studies, Oke-Ose, Akuro, Ara and the Polytechnic gate.

At the end of the tour, the following are the observations:

  1. That, the land was properly and legally acquired with compensation paid fully by the Kwara State Government.
  2. That, the level of encroachment of the land of Kwara State Polytechnic is unacceptable.
  3. That, the encroachment is detrimental to the current and future development of the Polytechnic.
  4. That, the sight of some of the villages on the Polytechnic property is an eyesore (Oke Aponle for example).
  5. That, the encroachment poses a serious moral, ethical and security threat to lives and properties of the Polytechnic Community.

RESOLUTIONS
Taking into consideration the observations above, the Conference resolves as follows:

  1. That the government should ensure that any individual or group of individuals who laid claim to any property on the land of the Polytechnic should contact KWAGIS to confirm their legal status.
  2. All illegal developments on the properties of the Polytechnic should be removed immediately.
  3. The conference resolved that the Government should as a matter of urgency embark on the erection of perimeter fencing of the property of Kwara State Polytechnic.
  4. Based on observation (2) above, the conference urges the State government to direct their designated agencies to affect the demolition of all identified illegal structures on the Polytechnic land.
