The Kwara State House of Assembly is advocating for a stronger focus on agriculture to boost food security and empower the next generation. During a recent session, Ganiyu Folabi Salau of the Omupo constituency presented a motion emphasizing the inclusion of Agricultural Science in the school curriculum from primary to secondary levels. Salau argued that agricultural education is key to physical and mental development, career opportunities, and sustainable economic decisions for students.
Following the motion, the House urged the Ministry of Education and the Universal Basic Education Board to revitalize agricultural studies in the state’s basic education curriculum. The Assembly also lauded Governor Abdulrahaman Abdulrasaq’s initiatives, including providing tractors for grassroots farmers, which aligns with Kwara’s agricultural transformation goals.
Additionally, the Assembly discussed the importance of dry-season farming to ensure food security throughout the year. Saba Yisa Gideon of Edu constituency highlighted that while some crops thrive in the dry season, many farmers focus only on the rainy season. He emphasized the state’s recent distribution of fertilizers and agricultural tools, stressing the need for campaigns on dry-season farming advantages.
The Assembly called on the government to intensify awareness efforts on suitable crops for dry-season farming and leverage irrigation systems to optimize agricultural productivity year-round.
