A former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Wole Olanipekun (SAN), has berated the former Military Head of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), on the recent launch of his autobiography in which he expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Olanipekun said that despite all the regrets expressed by Babangida over the annulment of the election, there was neither remorse nor apology to the family of Abiola and Nigerians for forgiveness.
He said that Babangida’s autobiography as it relates to the June 12, 1993 election was full of contradictions.
Olanipekun stated this in a lecture he delivered, yesterday, in honour of Pastor E.A. Adeboye to mark the cleric’s 83rd birthday held at the headquarters of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at Mowe, Ogun State, entitled, “Justice and Equity: Solution To Socio-Economic Problems In Nigeria.”
He described Adeboye “as a living legend who has contributed so much to societal values, ethos, pathos, credo and its upliftment.”
Olanipekun contended that what Babangida did was treasonable “and it is still treasonable.”
He, therefore, said that for Nigeria to attain its full potential in terms of stability and prosperity, the current structure of the country must be restructured.
Also, the Chairperson of Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency, Justice Eni Esan (rtd), blamed the political class for the rot in the system, noting that the reforms must start with the cleansing of the system that encourages corruption
In his remarks, the General Overseer, who was represented by his wife, Folu, noted that Nigerians should take their destiny into their own hands by being purveyors of good deeds that would give the country a systemic change for good.
Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun and former Senate President, Bukola Saraki have praised Adeboye’s unwavering faith and profound impact on society.
Abiodun, in a heartfelt tribute as Adeboye marked his 83rd birthday, described the cleric’s life as a beacon of humility, dedication, and spirituality.
He stated: “Celebrating Daddy G.O. @ 83! On behalf of the government and good people of Ogun State, I heartily congratulate our revered Father in the Lord, @PastorEAAdeboye. Your unwavering commitment to the service of God and humanity continues to be a source of inspiration to millions across the world.
“Your life of humility, dedication, and deep spirituality has not only strengthened the faith of believers but has also contributed immensely to the moral and socio-economic development of our nation.”
Saraki acknowledged the spiritual leader’s significant role in transforming lives through the RCCG.
In his tribute, Saraki wrote on X: “Happy birthday, Pastor Enoch Adeboye @PastorEAAdeboye. You are indeed a man whom the Almighty has used mightily, through the RCCG, to shape destinies and transform countless lives with your powerful messages of conviction, hope, and love.
“As my family and I join millions of Nigerians worldwide to celebrate you today, we pray that the Almighty continues to uphold you, granting you renewed strength, ever-increasing wisdom, and divine grace in all you do.”
