In my years in Ilorin, having completed my MSc in Sociology from a reputable Northern Nigeria and now working as the Country Lead for a reputable international NGO, I’ve traveled the 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT. Yet, nowhere have I encountered a sociocultural youth development association that has so uniquely transformed its community as the Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA).
If you live in Kwara, you’ve either heard of IEYDA’s impactful activities, witnessed their undeniable contributions across the Emirate, or felt their influence through the testimonies of the countless beneficiaries of their initiatives. Their annual empowerment programs have become a ritual of hope and progress, and this year’s 11th edition, the first under the leadership of Alhaji Muhammad Uthman Jagunmo as National President, stands tall as one of their finest achievements.
But before we delve into the remarkable achievements of this year’s program, let’s address an uncomfortable truth: there have been whispers. Some naysayers have accused IEYDA of being a political puppet, funded by shadowy figures for ulterior motives. Such claims remind me of the saying, *“Envy shoots at others and wounds itself.”*
I’ve often wondered, “Who are these politicians, and why are the beneficiaries from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliations?” The critics conveniently forget that if they succeeded in discrediting IEYDA, they’d leave a gaping hole in the Emirate’s development efforts. But, as the elders say, *“You cannot uproot a tree blessed by the heavens.”* With the blessings of *Sheikh Alimi* through the tongue of our revered Emir, *Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-gambari CFR,* IEYDA’s reputation remains untarnished, and their legacy continues to flourish.
Now, to the main story—the 11th Annual Empowerment Program. It was nothing short of a masterpiece of community service. This year’s event, held in the heart of Ilorin, radiated the beauty and vibrancy of the Emirate. I left my country home in Pakata to attend, choosing to sit quietly at the back to observe without drawing attention to myself.
The atmosphere was electric, yet deeply moving. From youths to the elderly, the smiles and gratitude on the faces of beneficiaries were infectious. As I sipped my Fanta, a woman, likely in her 60s, stood nearby. She was wiping tears from her face, overwhelmed with emotion. Curious, I asked, “What happened?”
Her response was both humbling and heart-wrenching: *“Bàbá Okomi, mio ro kàn irú Órè yìí”* (translated: “My Father-in-law— an informal usage of words by Ilorin women to give respect to a man whom they care to respect—, I never expected such generosity”). She narrated how the association had revitalized her small business, which had been on the brink of collapse. Her gratitude was so profound that it rekindled my faith in humanity. We spoke at length, and I silently resolved to support her business whenever I could.
This is the essence of IEYDA. It is not just an association; it is a lifeline for countless individuals across the Emirate. Ask around, and you’ll find no community untouched by their initiatives. At least five individuals in every locality have benefitted directly from their programs—an astounding testament to their reach and impact.
Under the visionary leadership of Alhaji Muhammad Uthman Jagunmo, the association has raised the bar even higher. This year, the program supported artisans, small business owners, students, and vulnerable individuals with tools, scholarships, and financial aid. The event also celebrated local culture, with traditional music and speeches that underscored the Emirate’s unity and strength.
However, there’s always room for improvement. Such a monumental event deserves coverage on national platforms like Channels TV and TVC to amplify its reach and inspire others. IEYDA’s story is one that should resonate far beyond Ilorin.
As I left the event, I couldn’t help but reflect on the proverb: *“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”* IEYDA embodies this wisdom. They have proven that with commitment, vision, and unity, a group of determined individuals can transform an entire community.
To the sponsors, donors, and well-wishers who continue to believe in IEYDA’s mission, your contributions are more than monetary—they are seeds of hope planted in fertile soil. To the leadership and members of IEYDA, your work is a beacon of light in a world often clouded by despair.
As the 11th Annual Empowerment Program draws to a close, it leaves behind a trail of joy, inspiration, and renewed hope. And to those who still doubt, remember: *“You cannot extinguish the sun with your hands.”*
IEYDA is here to stay, growing stronger with each passing year, a testament to the resilience and spirit of the Ilorin Emirate. May their story inspire others to rise and build, for in building others, we build ourselves.
