In a bid to promote excellence in journalism, Carrier Development With Augustina Armstrong-Ogbonna (CDWAA) hosted an interactive session on Thursday, 23rd, on Zoom for students of Journalism at the National Broadcast Academy, Radio Nigeria, Lagos State. The session, attended by over 15 students, featured insightful discussions and sharing of experiences by two seasoned journalists: Mrs. Augustina Armstrong Ogbonna, a Nigeria-US-based journalist and award winner, and Mr. Ajibola, publisher and CEO of Daily Insight, an online media outlet.

Mrs. Ogbonna emphasized the importance of dedication and consistent effort in becoming a successful journalist. “The journey to becoming a successful journalist is rarely instant. It’s a gradual process that requires dedication, consistent effort, and a deep connection to the community you serve.”Mr. Ajibola shared his own journey, starting from his role as governor of his department at the National Broadcasting Academy of Radio Nigeria in Lagos. “My journey started with my role as governor of my department, and from there, I knew journalism would be my path,” he said.

The initiative, according to Ogbonna, was formed out of a desire to build and train the next generation of journalists who can shape the landscape of media and societal development. The session highlighted the importance of acquiring skills, dedication, and passion in becoming a successful journalist. Students were encouraged to identify their niche and develop essential skills to excel in the profession.

Student journalists Abdulbasit Yusuf and Stephen Ahwen described the session as “informative and motivational.” “We realized that to excel in journalism, identifying one’s niche is crucial, as well as having a keen sense of observation to spot newsworthy stories,” they added.
