In the pursuit of knowledge, we often encounter individuals who leave an indelible mark on our lives, shaping not just our academic journeys but also our perspectives and aspirations. One such remarkable individual is Baba M.B. Lawal, a legendary teacher and a master of languages whose wisdom and teaching prowess have inspired countless students, including myself.

My first encounter with Baba M.B. Lawal was during a summer lesson program at ECWA Oja-Iya. My father, ever eager for me to excel, enrolled me in the program, emphasizing that I would learn under the tutelage of a great man, a true “commander of languages.” True to his reputation, Baba M.B. Lawal’s classes were transformative. Without any textbook or notebook, he walked into the classroom and effortlessly guided us through the intricacies of grammar and sentence construction in English. In that first session, I realized I was in the presence of a master. His ability to explain complex concepts with clarity and simplicity was unmatched, and his passion for teaching was evident in every word he spoke.

Years later, as fate would have it, our paths crossed again when I gained admission to study Mass Communication at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. To my delight, Baba M.B. Lawal was the pioneer Head of Department (HOD) of the program. Once again, he proved to be an extraordinary mentor, teaching us “English for Mass Communication,” a course that bridged the gap between linguistic proficiency and effective media communication.

In his class, he introduced us to his book Boomerang, a masterpiece that not only deepened our understanding of the English language but also broadened our horizons as budding communicators. Baba was not just a teacher; he was a trainer, equipping us with skills that extended beyond the classroom. His lessons emphasized critical thinking, creativity, and precision in communication, skills that remain invaluable to me to this day.

One of the most significant moments in my academic journey was having Baba M.B. Lawal as my ND project supervisor. True to his meticulous nature, he asked us to submit several research topics, carefully reviewed them, and selected the one he found most compelling. He did not stop there. Recognizing the importance of thorough guidance, he connected my group with Mrs. Ajibade, ensuring we had the right resources and support for our research work. Baba’s dedication to his students was evident in every step of the process.

What sets Baba M.B. Lawal apart is not just his academic brilliance but also his ability to inspire. He is more than a teacher, he is a father figure, a resourceful mentor, and a beacon of hope for many. His life and work embody the values of excellence, diligence, and humility.

Reflecting on my experiences with Baba, I am filled with gratitude for the profound impact he has had on my life and the lives of so many others. His legacy is a testament to the transformative power of education and the enduring influence of a truly great teacher. Baba M.B. Lawal is, without a doubt, a treasure in the field of knowledge, and his contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.

Happy birthday celebrations, Sir. Omo iyeru okin omo oloofa majo.
