The Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) organized a one-day capacity building training for its members in Ilorin to enhance their professional skills.

Opening the training session, the association’s Secretary, Prince Oyewale Oyelola, emphasized ASKOMP’s commitment to supporting the development of its members, ensuring they stay current in the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.

The training featured two sessions led by Dr. Abdulrasheed Saadudeen and Taofiq Olateju Esq. Dr. Saadudeen, former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at Kwara State Polytechnic, highlighted the critical role of journalists in producing informative and educational content. He stressed the importance of journalists as agenda-setters and opinion shapers, noting the need for strong English language skills and effective networking.

“Journalists are vital in keeping the public informed about their surroundings and can significantly influence public opinion and set agendas. To do this effectively, they must have a strong command of the English language and build strong relationships with their sources,” said Dr. Saadudeen.

In the second session, Olateju Esq. addressed the topic of Strategic Laws Against Public Participation (SLAPP). The distinguished lawyer from Ghalib Chambers emphasized that aggrieved individuals should seek legal redress in civil courts rather than using law enforcement to silence journalists.

“The 1999 Constitution, as amended, guarantees freedom of expression under Section 39(1). Any law contradicting this provision is null and void. Defamation, injurious falsehood, and criminal defamation are well-defined in our legal framework. Journalists acting within the bounds of the law should be protected, and those feeling wronged by publications should seek redress in civil courts,” Olateju explained.

The Kwara State Police PRO, Princess Adetoun Ejire, expressed gratitude to ASKOMP members for their unbiased reporting and significant contributions to keeping the public informed.

“I commend every member of this association for your unbiased service to Kwara State. Your efforts are highly appreciated, and we must continue to work together to maintain peace. The leadership’s initiative to organize this training is commendable, highlighting the importance of continuous learning,” said Princess Ejire.

In his keynote address, ASKOMP Chairman Salihu Shola Taofeek thanked all stakeholders in Kwara State for their support, which has facilitated the work of online journalists.

“This training reflects our commitment to continually enhancing our skills to meet the demands of the online media industry. We appreciate the support from all stakeholders in Kwara State, and we believe this mutually beneficial relationship will continue,” stated Taofeek.

During the event, Chairman Taofeek also announced Taofiq Olateju Esq. as the official Legal Adviser of the association.
